Walleye? We got em....

With a lack of fishing to be had from a 6 degree sled this time of year, we often find ourselves wondering what the heck are we to do with oursleves. Some synapse fired in the back of our heads, walleye. None of us had ever done it, so Rob set out on a mission to figure out what we needed (not like he was working or anything...)

With a pretty good idea and some gas, we headed out Saturday afternoon about 4 pm.

First pass, one bass, one walleye, one flounder. (Serious a flounder)

Second pass, walleye.......

Kept going like that until it was dark and we had 8 with one very large one lost at the boat. Pretty fun fishery, we will see if the hype about how they taste is true.

Rob and I decided it was time to do a much needed upgrade to the Super Z what with the pending fall season upon us.

We sat in the boat talking about ideas, brainstorming and planning.

Here is what we came up with...

We ripped out the old factory box and replaced it with this beauty...

We needed a fish box, for that rare occasion when we catch a fish. I was planning on building one from scratch like we did the transom box. Rob said, why not a truck box? Hmmmm....

Worked nicely. You can see in the above picture the plumbed lines. With the flip of a switch the box fills with fresh water and than drains it to the outside. Also contained in the box is the washdown system for the boat, no more coiled hose wrapping up on your legs when trying to land that trophy.

I havn't posted anything in a long time. Fishing has been slow for me with the summer, and I havn't popped the old camera out for anything anyway.

For the birthdays, the crew decided to head over to the desert and do some rafting and a little fishing and too much drinking.

The weekend started with smiles for miles.....

and as usual turned into mayhem and pain..........

We still had a great time and the river was good to us, we hit everything just right.

I am currently babysitting a friends 4 month old lab........

I think Turk is wondering what I have done.

So the day started like most other days fishing, a quick dry bagel and a Coors Light (Originals for fags).

I ran the Super Z and it's crew out to the hunting grounds.

The morning sky gave up it's beauty and raised the hopes of the fisherman aboard.

We spent the entire day pulling the anchor and "trying over there" in search of some suckers that wanted to do battle. Despite past days of glory, we were getting the royal skunk.

As the day was quickly coming to a close, I announced boat cleanup and said the often day saving words, "Cleanup fish!"

4 - 3 - 2 - 1, fun!

Roberto's rod gets a bite and the hook is set on a brick wall. "This is a good fish!", exclaimed Roberto. Aaron (PBF) took the rod with a chuckle and a smile. "Cmere you fish...", he said with confidence.

With a little instruction he was on his way to catching a real nice fish. The beast jumped 3 or 4 times, and each time an "Ahhhhhhhh, OOoOOOO" was let out from the crew. Roberto and I were arguing over whether we should boat and measure the monster as PBF's words of confidence turned into a guttural "Uhhhhmmmph" with each pump of the rod. After 15 minutes or so, his left arm was hanging by his side and shaking as the crew laughed and gave him words of encouragement.

Finally, with the "bubble of conceit" the fish came to the boat and was unhooked and admired.

It was in the 7 foot range, not a beast of an oversize, but on the small rods we use for these fish a challenge all the same. PBF was happy to have stuck it out and very happy it was over.

In the end, a pretty crappy day on Astoria, probably the worst fishing day for the Super Z in those waters. But smiles and high fives still made it to the decks of Ole Yellow.

So there we were, sitting in the drift boat minding our own business when a large rapid came upon us. We negotiated it properly, but with the shear weight in the front of the boat a sneaky wave of water crested the bow and landed directly in Rob's lap.

Despite the river's best efforts to scare us away, we found it's residents willing to eat some yarn.

A nice keeper found it's way to the net at the hand of Robbiedingo, and another for Gnoc as well.

In the end smiles outnumbered the fish, as it always seems to with good friends.

Got the cover off the drift boat and when looking for boots.

It was 23 degrees in the morning, making casting ice crystals on the line thru iced guides very difficult.

Once it warmed up to 33 it was business time. We just couldn't find any fish.
Last hole of the day, Normal-Sized-Darian finds no boot, but pure river chrome!

Every season I like to go on a Tillamook binge, I try my hardest to get it when there is a decent bite happening.

This year we went over on Thursday and droughted the whole day, not a bite. BUT, i saw upwards to 50 fish caught at the jetties. Sooooo, the binge began. We got two on Friday when the bite was not very good. We got into the monster bite at the jetties again, and couldn't get one. We were frustrated yet had smiles for miles with our two from the morning.

Saturday, I had a coupe buddies from work drive over and we all stayed at the coast so we could go to bed early and wake up "late" and have a good fresh morning.

Well, bait was in the water for bout 6 minutes and I was explaining to the boys how the bite would happen on their rods, and Stagefright was like "Is it anything like that?". He pointed to the back rod and sure enough, pounddown......... Roberto sticks the fish and hands it off to TG, it promptly comes unbuttoned. Ah well, we are 6 minutes in, we are gonna lay the wood to em. Nope.

Next 7 hours, not a bite! We fished all over, hunting for fish!!!!

We decided to go to the jetty, not really wanting to have to as we haven't bought a bite in there for 2 days on it.

We work our way in....

And wait, nothing. We see a some being caught here and there, but not like the last two days. Freshen baits and wait. Passengers getting green.

I start to see a bite going off next to the jetties. I have them reel up and we get our selves in line with the bite. TG drops his bait to the bottom and gets a weird look on his face. I give the nod to put his rod in the holster and it begins to pump. Robadito grabs the rod, feeds the fish and sticks him. Bait in the water less then 10 seconds. The fish takes us darn near the breakers on the bar, but we get it.

We get back into position and i lay my bait on the bottom......4, 3, 2, 1....feed the fish and we got another one on. Didn't even get all the rods in the water. This is one hot fish, we chase him through all the boats to the outside and it really kicks ole TG's butt!

Good day! Boys got their fish, Big D got 2 gallons of eggs for letting us stay at his place.......great day.

John was the jetty allstar, getting two there and Darian getting one. I broke one off in the jettys on some wierd ass bite and than pinched mine in the Coast Guard hole. I had another one pounddown and strip my bait, and I didn't get him. Good day tho!!

Made an early run out to the Coho grounds yesterday.

Hopes were high and the first hit the deck shortly after deploying.

After it was all said and done, the tenth fish hit the deck at 0830 and we headed home.

Whilst Chris cleaned up the mess 10 fish can make on a nice boat...

Roberto hurriedly made hookup plans for the evening.

Wasn't long after shove off Steve was hankering for a Rockstar...

Good thing we always party like a Rockstar....

I had a couple Rockstars and had to hit the bucket, Robert took over the wheel in my absence.

After draining the vein, I took a look at that flat ocean and pointed the bow West...

We went out to 170 feet of water and deployed..

We had our way with the salmon and even some bottom fish, Gnoc and his Lingcod

Great day, and a welcome site at the end of a day on the ocean!

So the boys and I decided to do some Columbia bankie fishing this weekend. We hooked 6 and landed 3 and it was quite the day. Here is the best story from it....

I took this picture because I thought it was a nice shot, litle did I know what was going to unfold in mere seconds.

The rod pounds down as I am hitting the off button on the camera, I stand up to make a run for it, and it flies out of the holder and into the river! We see the fish jump and the rod disappears into the depths. Gnoc....

can't believe one of his rod and reels is gone. Blames went out and Robby got the brunt of it.

Steve was just like, what the _____?

Than! 2 hours later and 100 yards down river, some guys start yelling....

"we got your rod!"

Rob runs down there and sure enough they have the rod. They pull it in and the fish is still on it! It gets landed and released and Rob sighs some relief as he no longer has to buy Gnoc a new set up.

Started my short sturgeon season yesterday. We had 3 oversize on with in the first hour. We don't play with these, once we know it is an oversize, we break em off. Uh uh, we aint there to play them.
We did however catch this 59 inch keeper. The largest keeper you can keep. Very nice!

Now there are 49 states that a person can be from and I probably wouldn't like them, Idaho is one of them. But this guy, GD for the purposes of anonymity, is an alright guy. A bit sensitive at times, but so am I, no wait, I'm not.
He and I have formed an alliance to combat the surge of chrome fish, and sometimes not so chrome. We started off the week with a monster. Dennis had some difficulty reeling in this beast, but we got it just the same!

After wiping the sweat from his brow, he proceeded to get a keeper. Not a bad fish and for some reason he was anxious to eat it. I pointed to a bucket and some mud on the bank and said fill it up, it will taste the same.

Next day, same results. more mud fish for the oven.

Next, I pinpointed an exact location for the baits to go and sure enough the rod doubles over and this beauty gets things moving. It was a very healthy fish, and a native as well. I am kinda anal about handling natives, so it didn't leave the water for more than a few seconds for it's photo. Released and happy, sore lip of course.

Than it was time for the "not so chrome" to happen. Again, pinpoint accuracy of casting calls and boat control resulted in this redstriper coming to the boat. He was photo-ed and released to do it again!

A great was had, and a few laughs along the way. Mostly at GD's expense. The third picture, unless it is going to be beat in the near future, is the nicest fish of my winter season.

Note, all fish caught side drifting............an art only effective with the right person on the oars! Right GD!?

Don's Fish

So my good friend Dennis' family came over here from Twin Falls for the Holiday. While they were here I wanted to get his Dad out fishing. I was targeting steelhead as that is what he wanted to catch. The only thing I hoped was that he would at least tangle with some leather-ed ole boot or something. After a few shameful looks, the two of them had the side drifting thing down and we were on our way. I came upon a run I usually get a fish out of and told them that if they could do this just right, we might be able to hook a fish. Sure enough 3/4 the way thru, Don's rod loads up and I tell him to smoke it!!!!! At first we weren't sure what we had, but after a minute or so we knew it was a Chinook. Now I had them using 1141's to do this type of fishing. This is a great steelhead rod, can be quite the work out with it and a steelie. A Chinook is a different story. The rod is rated for 4-8 lbs and we are using 8 lb leaders tied to #4 hooks. For all you non-fisherman out there, that is SMALL! Once we worked the fish over a bit, it figured out it was hooked and began migrating downstream. All I could do was follow. Don did a great job with the fight, only putting the right amount of pressure on the ole cow. After about 200 yards of river the fish decided to tuck into the bank and wrap us around some low hanging limbs. The current was such that I couldn't stop the boat there and ended up about 30-40 yards down river. I asked Don if he thought it was hung up and he shook his head yes. I jumped out of the boat and told him I was going to wade up there and see what was going on, be ready to real like mad! I was the only with waders, and I was up to about my waist when I got to the where the fish was. I pulled the line slowly and it felt solid in the branches. I thought to myself, at least he got a good fight out of it. Just as I was letting the line go I felt a tug, fish was still there. I yelled down river to get ready for a mad dash or a break away........I kicked my leg in front of me trying to spook the fish into doing something other than lie there. As I did, I felt something hit my leg very gently. I looked down and saw the tail of the fish right beside me. I gently grabbed the wrist of the fish expecting an explosion of water. Nothing. This fish was pooped from the battle it just went through. I told Don to get ready and I really clamped down on the wrist, nothing. I reached under the belly with my other hand and lifted the fish out of the water. I held it up and asked if they wanted it, it took a second for their mouths to close enough to say yes! I tossed the fish up on the bank and freed the line from the tree. I carried the fish downriver to the boat, the boys eyes as wide as they get. Don said he had never seen anyone land a Chinook quite like that, and I answered that is just how we do it in Oregon. Wink.

Ole Robby and I hit the cold highway early this morning. Launched amongst the fleet and parked in the first hole, one I have done well in before.

Robby put on a clinic, doing handoffs and LDR's. Limiting out in the first hole. I released a high twenties boot, and Robby sidedrifted up a steelhead but crackered it after a brief fight. We missed probably another 10 or so opportunities to hook fish.

Overall, a very nice day!

I fished Friday as a guest in the 'D killer', we got several fish, but this one was stellar!

Got myself motivated to go again and took a couple of old friends. We had a great day of finding fish and this one was on the deck before the sun even came up!

I was out on a 5 day fishing binge and needed a break. So I drove home tonight and am going to take tomorrow off and clean some stuff and reset.
For the three days I had slotted out a 10 fish qouta, didn't get near it. We got a few and had some good times.
I normally don't take pictures of the fish I catch anymore, but this one was a 37 lb buckaroo I got on Wednesday. What a fish!

The Kid had a nice one today that she set the hook on and fought all the way to the net. It really gave her a fight. Unfortunately, I was in "go home" mode and butchered the darn thing without taking a picture.

We stopped at the lake to let Turk do some water retrieves.

Back for more on Sunday, and hopefully get closer to the qouta!

I pull up to a stop light Saturday and wind up next to a Porsche Carrera GT. Man what a sweet car.

I am looking this thing over, and than I look at the driver. He is looking side to side, on the phone, and just in a general panic.
I look more at the car, thinking man it would be bad ass to have something like that, and I notice a puddle by his front tire. As we sit there at the light the puddle is growing. Light turns green and he whips a big U-ie and as he does, I watch GALLONS, yes I said gallons, of water coming out from the bottom of this car. I am going to assume he was headed back to the dealer in a hurry!!!!

Got home from work on Friday and jumped in the truck with the sled in tow. Hit the ramp at 730 pm with a couple of my good buddies doing the same and headed for one of our favorite holes!
Set the hogline in the dark and gale force winds, and it was done right the first time. NICE! A few too many drinks were drank, and morning came real soon. I picked up my crew on the beach and waited for some tide.

Well, we decided to hit the ole river once again in search of the Columbia King. We launched at 0900 and anchored at 0920. Werblers went out, and the third and final Columbia King hit the deck at 1115. Home by 1300 and back to sleep.

The kid is pretty good with reelin em in, I think this is her personal best. 26 lber!!!

Had the day off and decided to meet up with a friend from work and her family for an overnight trip at the beach. Now I can't get near the beach without a fishing pole, let alone my sled and full setup. We settled into the bay on the last part of the flood and made our first pass. My rod starts hammering, and I set the hook and pass it off to MJS. It was her first ever salmon trip and I think she enjoyed it. With a little coaching from me, we got this nice 18lber in the net, first pass of the day!

Her Dad was quite proud of her.

Once we got back to camp, the Kid saddled up the horses and took off down the beach. She had a great time with some great horses and great weather.

Gonna need a bigger boat!

The Kid, the Dog, and I went fishing for summer steelhead today. We hit the water at the crack of dawn only to find out that the summer hadn't made it to Ranier yet. It was low 50's and over cast and all we had on was shorts, tshirt and flipflops. Kinda cold.

The only thing we could do to keep warm was keep piling on life jackets and getting in the dry bags. Crappy!

When we finally got 4 jackets on each, and shoved ourselves into the dry bags, a rod goes off. Wouldn't you know it!!!!! We both jumped up, and hop to the stern looking like we were in the gunnysack race at a church picnic. Pathetic. We somehow manage to hook the fish, and the battle ensues.

But,,,,,,,,,,the kid crackered it midfight. She is 1 for 4 at this spot in the river. She needs more practice.

So it was that time again, me birthday. It has become a bit of tradition to go rafting on this day for the last few years and this one was no exception. This year we decided it would be cool to ride our motorcycles over there, that was pretty fun. Other than a sore butt after a couple hours, the ride was fantastic. We got there without incident and man was it hot. Some drinking was done, no wait, a lot of drinking was done.
On Saturday, the Army Corp needed to drop the water level to what was a never before seen low (according to the OSP officer I was talking to) in order to try and retrieve the body of a poor soul that had been pinned against a rock for more than a week up in white horse. Due to that low water, the raft trip was interesting to say the least. Lots of rocks that are not normally exposed, and some that are normally exposed were twice as big.

I saw the master, Chip Foose, using a Mothers Powerball on TV. Look like a decent idea, and today Joe's had them on sale. Damn thing was 20 bucks, but when I got to using it on my bike, it paid for itself.
You chuck it up on your drill and put some chrome polish on it, let it fly across everything chrome. My wheels needed it badly. This things whips through road grime and brake dust like butter! Than as the polish dries it buffs right off to a show room shine. It even reshapes itself too small areas like between spokes and handlebar risers. If you like a clean polished bike like I do, it is worth the 20 smackers!

Spent the good part of the day with my buddy B Rad on his Hewescraft. We saw like 2 fish caught and heard of a total of 5 from the checker. Nice day, just not a lot of fish.

I stood at the bathroom door of Hooters last night for near 3 hours, waiting for the fight that has been built up for months, even years. Ortiz was gonna finally make that stupid old man Shamrock shut the hell up! Well Ortiz won, but it was one of the biggest "robs" I have yet seen. Neither fighter, especially Shamrock, were close to finished and the ref pulled Tito off Ken 1 minute and 8 seconds into the fight. Shamrock should have pulled Dana White in the ring and demanded the bell be rung again...........crap!
Than, my main man, Andrei Arlovski, was so knockout hungry he stood in the ring with Sylvia for 25 minutes and exchanged jabs. I almost fell asleep during that bout!

Winding down, I received a custom piece from a chap back east. He machined it out of billet AL. I had to drill and tap my existing cap and set this all in there. It really cleaned that part of the tank up. Thanks Scott!

Had the day off today and really needed to get the kid from Texas into some fish. Awwwwwwwwwww.............shad. It took us awhile to get going this morning, but when we finally got the Dick Nites out, bang bang bang bang bang bang. We had found a slot that the shad happen to like.
First up was Evan, tongue out and all!

He landed his first "Oregon" fish.

Next poundown went to my pro, Sonora. She handled it like a true veteran.

Evan asked if he could land this one for her.

Snapped a nice one of her and her first of the day.

Once we got home, I put the vacationing Texan right to work. Umm Evan, you missed a couple spots!

Fished the estuary today for some fresh sturgeon. Not that great for us, we got 1 keeper, 47 inches and a handful of smaller ones.
At Sturgeon Paul's, there was a good showing of fish, some real monsters. I think I am going to try and get a crew for next weekend and try again. I need some sturgeon.

Well if there is one thing about fishing in June I like, it's the crowds.

This area of the river typically will hold a couple hundred boats, during the peak of the season. Today it held 3. Very quiet and relaxing, due to lack of both people and fish. The kid and I had a good time, she worked on her boat driving skills on the wide open water and her baiting kills.

She did good at the driving, but her baiting needs some work.
